William (Bill) Bates is Adjunct Faculty at Carnegie Mellon Architecture. He has a long history of international development experience in corporate real estate and construction and retired as the Vice President of Real Estate for Eat'n Park Hospitality Group, Inc.

Previously, he held a similar position at Marconi Communications, Inc. (formerly FORE Systems, Inc.), where he managed the corporate facilities and property portfolio expansion from 28 to 150 global sites in five years. Prior to that he served as the Vice President of Strategic Facilities Planning at PNC Bank, the Design and Construction Manager for Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and was a partner in a private architectural practice.

He served as the President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Prior to that he was President of AIA Pennsylvania and President of AIA Pittsburgh. Bill was also the founding president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects.

His community engagements include service as founding Secretary of the Allegheny County Parks Foundation, President of the Presbyterian SeniorCare Network and Vice President of the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Board. He previously held the positions of President of the Green Building Alliance, Vice President of the Allegheny Land Trust, board member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and board member of the Pittsburgh Regional Clean Cities Council, as well as numerous commissions for Mt. Lebanon Township, the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the Pittsburgh Airport Authority. He is currently Secretary of the Pennsylvania Architects Licensure Board and trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

A registered architect with a professional degree from the University of Notre Dame, Bill has also studied post graduate construction management at Pennsylvania State University and Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from The Boston Architectural College.
