Stephen R. Lee

Professor Steve Lee served the School of Architecture as department head for twelve years (2008–2020) and directed and taught in the Design/Build Studio for the school’s first professional degree programs following his headship until his retirement in June 2024. He was the faculty advisor for the school’s three Solar Decathlon teams (2002, 2005 & 2007) and his teaching activities have resulted in the integration of undergraduate and graduate courses related to design, environment, materials, structures and construction. Design Intelligence selected Professor Lee as one of 2019’s “25 Most Admired Educators.” His scholarly and practice activities focus on issues of systems integration, material innovation, renewable energy and the integrated building delivery process for high performance commercial and residential architecture. He is a LEED accredited professional and has provided sustainable design consulting services for institutional and commercial clients in Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States. Innovative sustainable projects on which Professor Lee has been involved include the Armstrong World Industries Susquehanna House (Lancaster, PA), the Jean Canfield Government of Canada Building (Charlottetown, PEI), the PA Department of Environmental Protection South Central Office Building (Harrisburg, PA), Alcoa Fjardaal Smelter (Reydarfjordur, Iceland), Energy Innovation Center, International Union of Operating Engineer’s Training Facility and Phipps Conservatory (Pittsburgh, PA) and multiple projects for the Carnegie Mellon Campus. Steve is the Co–Founder/Consulting Principal of TAI+LEE, Architects PC.
