Matthew Krissel

Matthew Krissel is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and has led the design and construction of transformative architectural projects in North America and internationally for over two decades. He is a principal at Perkins&Will, a global, interdisciplinary architecture and design firm.

In 2023, Matthew co-founded the Built Environment Futures Council (BEFC), a diverse, multidisciplinary group that advances design, technology and artificial intelligence in architecture and construction with actionable leadership and insight. He also founded and directs Creative Lab 3, an innovative research and design platform focusing on architecture, writing and photography to catalyze and shape ideas and research that inspire change and transform our collective future.

He regularly shares his work, methods and ideas nationally and internationally, contributing to AIA design juries, industry forums and publications. Projects he has worked on have won awards from the World Architecture Festival, London’s Centre for the Built Environment, the AIA, Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards and the Chicago Athenaeum. He has been interviewed for articles in Dwell, Fast Company, Metropolis, Architectural Record and Architect magazines and has been featured in numerous published books on architecture and design.

Matthew has recently given talks at the Federation of Panamerican Associations of Architects, Design Philadelphia, the Building Museums Symposium, the London Committee on Design, the AIA National Conference, AIA New York’s Global Dialogues Committee, the University of Toronto, Harvard University and the AIA’s Technology in Architectural Practice Conference. He has served on academic design juries at the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, MIT, the University at Buffalo and the University of Texas at Austin. He has chaired multiple American Institute of Architecture design juries, including the 2017 AIA National Innovation Award, the 2016 AIA New York Design Awards and, most recently, the 2023 AIA Peconic Design Awards.

Before joining Perkins&Will, Matthew was a Partner at KieranTimberlake in Philadelphia. His design work over nearly 20 years at KT helped shape the firm’s most significant and impactful projects, including iconic, institution-defining architecture and small homes with big ideas.

Notable completed projects include the award-winning Paulson Center at New York University, the Embassy of the United States in London and Cellophane House™ featured at the Museum of Modern Art.
