Assistant Teaching Professor Sarosh Anklesaria is the recipient of the 2025 Henry Hornbostel Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor recognizing a teacher in the College of Fine Arts.

The award is named after Henry Hornbostel, the first Dean of the College of Fine Arts and the architect of several Carnegie Mellon University buildings including the College of Fine Arts, Baker Hall, Doherty Hall, Hammerschlag Hall and Margaret Morrison Carnegie Hall. Anklesaria will be recognized at Carnegie Mellon’s Celebration of Education Awards Ceremony on April 24.

Since joining the Carnegie Mellon Architecture faculty as the T. David Fitz-Gibbon Professor of Architecture in 2020, Anklesaria has gone on to become an Assistant Teaching Professor and Track Chair of the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program. Under his leadership, he has helped steward the M.Arch program to accreditation by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Effective July 1, Anklesaria will be promoted to Associate Teaching Professor.

Through the M.Arch Praxis sequence of studio courses, Anklesaria engages M.Arch students with a consideration of architecture as a broad framework for worldmaking across political, social and ecological contexts to locate “praxis” in the context of architectural agency and design ethics. His efforts have helped to grow and develop the next generation of designers poised to address the pressing challenges of our time.

As an architect and educator, Anklesaria is interested in an expansive notion of architectural agency, one that synthesizes architecture’s formal and tectonic capacities with questions of socio-ecological pertinence. His current design research considers agency across various scales and geographies to include investigations into the entanglements between justice, ecology, worldmaking and architecture.

“Since he arrived at Carnegie Mellon Architecture, Sarosh has made a profound impact on the School’s culture, pedagogy and students,” said Head of School Omar Khan. “He generously shares his dedication and passion for architecture with our students, inspiring them to strengthen both their technical and conceptual skills. Sarosh helps prepare our students to address the three challenges of climate change, artificial intelligence and social justice through ambitious, innovative and dedicated teaching to foster a strong community of creators.”
