Christina Brown (B.Arch ’20) Contributes to Studio Informing $650 Million Plan to Redevelop Singapore’s Sungei Kadut Industrial Estate into an Eco-District

Christina Brown co-led the presentation of the final studio proposal to government officials from JTC Corporation, the Singapore Food Authority (SFA), and the Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA).

Christina Brown (B.Arch ’20) participated in a study abroad course in spring 2019 that is now being used to inform the redevelopment of Singapore’s Sungei Kadut industrial estate into an Eco-District. Christina participated in the graduate studio, the youngest member of the team, as a visiting student in the Master of Science, Integrated Sustainable Design program at the National University of Singapore.

The studio’s project scope was to reimagine Sungei Kadut, a 500-hectare (1,236 acre) site equivalent to about one percent of Singapore’s total area, into a technological and ecological innovation hub. The project was sponsored by the JTC Corporation, a statutory board under the Singapore Ministry of Trade and Industry, that invited notable guest lecturers to teach the students on topics of urban design, ecology, resiliency, and circular economy. Guests speakers included Serge Salat, Chrisna Du Plessis, Anuj Jain, and Ken Webster. 


 

The studio’s work was exhibited at the URA and is being used as a resource to inform the development of the final Sungei Kadut Eco-District Masterplan. The JTC Corporation unveiled plans for the $650 million development which will transform the industrial estate into an innovation hub focused on agricultural technology (agri-tech), industry, environmental technology, and circular economy while bridging ecological connections and countrywide transportation in a thoughtful way.
