From prehistoric times to the 20th century, this course examines a broad spectrum of building forms and urban planning in China, Japan, Korea, India and Southeast Asia. Examples are drawn not only from extant structures but also from further visual and material evidence from the latest archaeological discoveries. Students develop critical thinking skills in architectural analysis through an engaging hands-on learning experience by making connections and parallels between buildings from different cultures and between historical and modern eras. The course also motivates next-generation architects to include an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspective in their own works of design. Coursework includes discussions, reading, open-note quizzes, architectural research projects and presentations. Non-majors are welcome.
