Digital Fabrication Skills
This course serves as an introduction to the type of equipment and methodologies utilized in architectural fabrication. Students will develop a basic understanding of the field to leverage these processes to explore and represent the complex nature of their designs.

The formal qualities explored by designers today necessitate the use of sophisticated tools with a combination of flexibility and precision. This course serves as an introduction to the type of equipment and methodologies utilized in architectural fabrication. Students will develop a basic understanding of the field to leverage these processes to explore and represent the complex nature of their designs. Through lectures and lab sessions, students learn the affordances of the machines available in the dFAB (Design Fabrication Lab), how to prepare 3D CAD models in Rhino 3D for digital fabrication, and basic CAM (computer aided manufacturing) programming. A series of projects, each highlighting an individual machine, will reinforce this technical knowledge while requiring students to rationalize their designs so their physical manifestations are informed by the techniques introduced.
