This course explores several evolving topics of material and digital culture in contemporary architectural design, research and practice in order to provide foundational knowledge necessary for the establishment of the MAAD thesis proposal. Texts by leading practitioners, academics and researchers serve as the content for weekly discussions and help outline the changing nature of the discipline and an evolving landscape of contemporary practice and research. The small class size provides a unique opportunity to foster discourse and debate while building the culture of the MAAD program. Engagement with the graduate 48-634 – Architectural Theory & Contemporary Issues course during selected weeks of the semester, as well as the co-requisite 48-620 – Graduate Seminar: Situating Research course, help MAAD students connect to other research agendas, methodologies and priorities of graduate programs in the school.
