Burdett Assistantship

Carnegie Mellon Architecture will announce the call for applications for the next award cycle in the fall of 2025.

The Burdett Assistantship was established on December 10, 1982 in recognition of Bob Burdett’s long and outstanding service to Carnegie Mellon University and the profession. Burdett received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture in 1950 from the College of Fine Arts and spent more than 30 years as a faculty member at the university.

This award is open to all students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture and is intended to support projects and activities that will enhance the winning student’s future work. According to its charter, the winner of the Burdett Assistantship “shall possess love of their subject, integrity, patience, fairness and respect for others since these are the qualities exemplified by Bob Burdett throughout his career.” Scholarships are awarded to B.Arch and M.Arch students.

Applicants must submit a proposal which clearly explains the project purpose, research objectives, methods and materials. This award can support a collective project by multiple students. Selection is based on the impact of the proposal in relation to the applicant’s future work.

To be considered for the Burdett Assistantship, eligible applicants must submit a complete application that includes the following information:

• A one-page project proposal explaining the project
• A one-page budget and schedule plan

Fall 2024 Award Amount: $3,000 each (two (2) available for B.Arch and one (1) available for M.Arch)

The Burdett Assistantship is open to all B.Arch and M.Arch students pursuing their first professional degree in architecture.
